In recent weeks, a number of players have approached the staff with complaints that are, effectively, two sides of the same coin:
On the one hand, some of our players are frustrated that they are facing OOC stress and IC penalties for low investment of OOC activity/time into a game that was intended to be slower paced from the beginning.
On the other hand, we have players who feel that Garou genre/activities are being left out of the majority of the game’s approach to “slice of life” RP and that it’s hindering the ability of those who wish to, to pursue plot.
After discussing this with Mists, she asked that staff post the following clarification regarding expectations for this game:
Genre vs. Plot
At the end of the day, while this game is “slice of life” and is intended to allow you to choose your own level of involvement/activity, it is still a “slice of life GAROU” game, and there is still a minimum activity threshold for participation.
The easiest way to explain this is by thinking about genre vs. plot.
Plots are the things the STs are running – the Wyld Threshold and cult, the Hexweaver, the vampires in Eureka, the fomori popping up around town, etc. This is always optional. This includes metaplot. While, IC, we have NPCs and PCs handing out responsibilities for investigating various aspects of metaplot, OOC you do not have to devote a ton of time to this if you don’t wish to or if you're feeling overwhelmed. If you don’t want to participate in a plot or need to streamline the process of participating, please contact the staff and we will either write you a justification for why you can’t be involved or help you participate IC without using a lot of OOC time. This might be through bulleted downtime actions in your private forum, downtime lits if you feel up to writing them, etc.
What cannot be opted out of is Werewolf genre. Ahrouns are expected to fight. Galliards are expected to sing tales. Theurges are expected to handle spiritual matters. However, once again, this doesn’t have to take up large amounts of OOC time. It could be as simple as tagging into a moot thread (seriously, please tag moot threads) and saying “I’m participating in the revel and killing all the things”. It could be posting downtime actions saying “I’m building shrines and making offerings to the spirits”. For Galliards—because goddamn, writing up stories is hard and sometimes frustrating when you can just click a link on someone else’s scene and read it—we’ve created a new tales template you can use to quickly and easily do your auspicial duties.
(Also, speaking of Galliards, you don’t actually have to wait to run scenes in which people tell you that they did something, and then run an additional scene telling the tale – you can simply PM the players involved in a scene, check to be sure it’s cool if you sing their tales, and then fill out and post the template.)
We understand that a lot of people are on these boards strictly for occasional social RP, romance, etc. There is nothing wrong with that. But, unless you are playing a kinfolk, some minimum effort must go into addressing the Garou aspects of your character’s life; otherwise, there’s no point in playing a True Born. It is entirely possible to have most of that work happening in downtimes and through other shortcuts, and if you come to us for help on how to do that, we are happy to give it.
For those for whom it has been a concern (like our Ragabash), we are in discussion about ways to make things that people might be doing in their private forums (like submitting downtimes/lists of actions/renown) to fulfill their duties known more publicly. We are also considering creating a quick reference guide to each character’s skills and reputation, so that if you (a) need something specific, or (b) simply want to know what somebody is generally known for, it’s at your fingertips.
For the moment, I think that’s everything. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Dark Fungus, Kirijama, or me.
